Australia to Europe without flying

Sydney to Brussels without flying
Last week, I decided to leave my job at Google to fulfill a dream I’ve had for some time now. I have bought a one-way ticket from Brussels to Sydney. From there, I will try to go back to Europe without taking a single flight. This will also be my only rule: there’s no time limit and no fixed itinerary. The line I draw on this map is just a vague draft and the itinerary might change a lot on the way.

I’ll focus heavily on my photography during the trip, and I’ll make sure I update this website and blog. So expect it to become more interesting than it has been so far!

Departure date: 7th of October 2009

  1. Cool idea.
It is always interesting to me with people who try different solutions. This is also what we try to show on our blog http://www.extendedworldtravel.com. There is not just one way to get from Sydney to Brussels:)
Maybe we can make a post about you once you get in to the journey?
    Good luck
    Magnus

  2. Thanks Magnus! There are certainly many ways to do this, the map is really just a draft and I’ll probably end up taking a very different route.
You are welcome to write about my trip once I’m gone, that would be great!

  3. Hello,

Olivier Vander Elst just sent me a message telling me shortly your story. I met him in India three years ago as I was traveling from Paris to Paris via China (no planes either, but on the same continent it’s quite easier !!!). Olivier told me you might need contacts on your road, or even tips on anything.
I’d be glad to be helpful and you can mail me anytime. I’m actually living in Paris (by the way I’m french, so if you prefer to speak french…) but hope to move traveling before next year.

See you ! and farewell !

  4. Hey Francois,
